NCE article follows the BIM journey of groundwork & formwork systems specialists Mabey Hire

Last week bimstore received a special mention in a news article written by industry publication, New Civil Engineer. In the article, groundwork and formwork systems specialists Mabey Hire discussed how conducting extensive research of their client base enabled them to provide them with the BIM content needed to deliver their projects.

Discussing BIM adoption for temporary works, Mabey Hire sales engineer Billy McCormick explains the drivers for adopting BIM, stating that the urgency to develop their in-house capability was reinforced when Tier 1 contractor clients began asking about their BIM readiness. “Big contractors like Skanska and Laing O’Rourke were asking us where we were with BIM, which really got us moving,” says McCormick.

Since making the decision to adopt BIM, Mabey Hire has been on a two year journey which has involved an assiduous amount of research. “We weren’t sure which route to go down, so the early networking events such as BIM Show Live really helped us to make good contacts with software vendors, training companies and people such as our eventual content partner”. One of the greatest complexities Mabey Hire faced was the fact that its clients were not all using the same software, however in spite of this, they decided on a Revit format for its BIM content and then were faced with the next challenge, to create a BIM library.

Discussing the process and decision to work with bimstore, McCormick explained “At the early stages we made contacts and put briefs together about how we wanted our content created and tried to get an idea of cost. The difficulty we found was that none of the companies that created content had done so for any products like ours.”

After several meetings Mabey Hire settled on commissioning bimstore to deliver their content creation. “We eventually went with bimstore” explains McCormick. “They were certainly very helpful with the content creation - they did some prototypes and there was a lot of discussion on the level of detail in the products.”
