What is BIM?

Building information modeling (BIM) is an integrated process for collaboratively exploring a project's key physical and functional characteristics digitally—before breaking ground or beginning prototype production. BIM is characterized by the early development of information-rich, coordinated, 3D models that remain at the center of the workflow throughout a project lifecycle—from planning and design through construction and into operations.

Long before breaking ground, architects, engineers, and contractors can use these 3D models to visualize and analyze entire projects, evaluating for a variety of factors, including constructability, schedule, and resource use. As a result, they can identify and resolve problems early in the design phase—when decisions can have the greatest impact on cost, schedule, and sustainability.
